FTA - digital tacho date 'unrealistic'

Document Actions
The implementation date for Digital tachographs as specified by the EU still remains unrealistic according to the FTA (Freight Transport Association), despite progress by vehicle manufacturers.

The EU Commission's mandatory introduction date for the fitment of digital tachographs of 5th August 2005 still looks a long way away, despite news last week that two manufacturers may have vehicles fitted with digital tachographs available by the deadline.

It is unclear whether vehicles will be available in sufficient numbers or with enough time to spare for bodywork to be fitted. It is also uncertain whether calibration centres will be ready to calibrate digital tachographs. While vehicle manufacturers can enable the calibration process, final calibration can only be undertaken at point of sale when the vehicle registration number is known. VOSA's standards manual, which is needed before training of fitters can begin, is still under preparation.

This week FTA meets with DVLA regarding practical aspects of smart card issue and replacement, and the DVLA smart card fee proposals published in late December.
