Revolutionary Cab Concept Unveiled

Document Actions
"Optimus", MIRA's landmark sleeper-cab concept was unveiled today, by SMMT Chairman Christopher McGowan, at the Commercial Vehicle Show (Birmingham NEC).

By adopting MIRA's modular design and digital process, vehicle makers will slash months off development schedules and millions of pounds of development spend from future cab programmes. The fully detailed underlying design can be readily restyled to meet specific brand requirements without costly re-engineering.

The design incorporates best-in-class-packaging zones for all popular chassis, powertrain and HVAC requirements - whilst delivering driver delight features such as: a flexible living compartment with multipurpose bunk comprising an ingenious stowage shelf that flips down to form a comfortable backrest. Naturally, the design also incorporates standing headroom for the occupants.

Ken Anderson, MIRA's Engineering Design Manager commented: "It will be satisfying to learn that key features of this concept will go forward into the next generation of vehicles. The project clearly demonstrates MIRA's ability to deliver an innovative, yet practical product; managing the project from concept to production."

The future of the cab design process will look considerably different, claim design and development specialists MIRA Ltd. In keeping with the firm's pioneering reputation, visitors to stand 3361 will be the first to witness a shining example of a truly digital design process. Optimus powered through the styling and engineering design phases without the need to reconcile the previously disparate software languages of styling and engineering, or resort to traditional reverse engineering from clay models. Styling the design directly in the industry standard 'CATIA' CAD software enabled the requisite design engineering to progress in concert with styling evolutions. MIRA's approach ensures that at all times proposed styling changes are feasible within known legislative, structural and packaging constraints.

Anderson continued: "As a design and development consultancy, simply replicating our client's designs and processes will not draw them to MIRA. We need to show that we bring something new to the table. Optimus demonstrates our commitment to the delivery of new thinking and fully engineered solutions in equal measure."

MIRA, are proven exponents of innovative design and used their broad experience to prescribe the materials and production techniques required to produce the design, taking full advantage of known volume manufacturing considerations.
